Snow Storms in USA

A state of emergency has been declared in five US states after a rare snow and ice storm swept into the Deep South.

Millions have been affected by the extreme winter weather that brought traffic to a halt and cancelled hundreds of flights at the world’s busiest airport in Atlanta, Georgia.

Around 50 children were stuck on a school bus overnight after thousands of motorists were left stuck on grid-locked roads in the city.

Troopers were sent to schools where pupils were stranded because they could not make it home.

Police in an Atlanta suburb also helped deliver a baby girl on a motorway when the extreme weather brought roads to a standstill.

Sandy Springs police captain Steve Rose said the baby girl was delivered at around 5.20pm local time yesterday.

It was not clear if her parents were heading to the hospital when they got stuck in the traffic jam.

The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi declared states of emergency.

‘Residents should not overreact but should make plans now to ensure they are prepared for prolonged freezing conditions and icy roadways,’ said Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.

In the Midwest, several states saw schools and other facilities close for a second consecutive day as dangerous wind chills were predicted.
