Stop Eating Our Corn!

  Articles       Trackback

By: Akinori Kimura

Fascinated by machinery, a Japanese farmer bought a big foreign tractor to grow his corn and apples in northern Japan. Thirty years ago he had a conversion, however, to growing organically, a conversion that involved learning about sharing, about participating in nature's gift economy.  Below is one of his experiences. ]

Facebook? Are you serious?

Facebook and its users have been best friends for a long time. Well, maybe not that long, but with the technology galloping into a new direction with each passing day, every new fad seems like a childhood memory. I don’t even remember when I set up my account on this social network. In fact, mention the floppy disk to a 10-year-old and his reaction is bound to be, “Whatever grandpa!”

Fighting The Sugar Mafia

By: Javed Chaudhry

Every event that happens in our lives has various aspects to it. One aspect of the invasion of Muhammad Bin Qasim at Deebal (near present-day Bhambore) is that Hajjaz bin Yusuf had sent an army, under Qasim’s command, to help and free Muslim pilgrims captured in territory under Raja Dahir’s control. But there is another important aspect to all of this as well. Muslims were a rising power in those days and were trying to spread their influence to Asia, Africa and even Europe. However, in this they couldn’t afford to let even a small ruler like Raja Dahir plunder Muslim ships and enslave Muslim women and children because that would put the writ of the whole Muslim state at peril.

A Child Soldier

  Articles       Trackback

By: Maheen A Rashdi

The eight-year politically charged trial of Omar Khadr ended two weeks ago. Khadr was sentenced by a military jury for 40 years behind bars for killing a US soldier with a hand grenade during a firefight in 2002 in Afghanistan. His lawyer had managed to strike a plea bargain through a confession of guilt (apparently bartered by the Canadian government), which eventually reduced his final sentence to eight years.

Golden Days

As autumn slips silently towards winter there is a discernible fragrance in the air: the sharp tang of crisp, evening cold, the earthy aroma of falling leaves, blue drifts of spicy wood smoke and the invigorating pine-fresh stickiness of newly fallen cones which coat your fingers with tart resin when you stoop to pick them up.

Community-Alan-Toy-horiz

Community gardens dispatch No. 5: Park Drive, Santa Monica

Summer was hard on Alan Toy’s tomatoes. There wasn’t enough sun, and that led to mildew, but he’s not complaining. His herbs — mint, cilantro, thyme, basil, oregano, sage — are all doing well, and the carrots he had sown a few weeks ago are coming up thick and bushy. Now if he can keep the squirrels out, he’ll be dining on the crop through the fall.

Grabbing The Opportunity Before it Passed

  Articles       Trackback

By: Nicrobalex

I came across HelpOthers one afternoon at work and I left my office that day filled with inspiration, wondering how I could make a difference in someone’s life, even if only for a moment.  I’m in a period of transition moving to a new home as a single parent with three children, finances are tight, my mom is fighting ovarian cancer, my sister has been laid off, my ex-husband is out of work.  Life is less than rosy for me right now and I was eager for an opportunity, quite honestly just to feel better about life and make someone else feel better.  I was eager to give.

What A Daughter Feels… – Noushah Arshad

By: Noushah Arshad

Although we live in the same house but we hardly meet for ten or fifteen minutes daily. When I get up in the morning, he has already left for office. He arrives home late and tired. Mostly he is so tired that he goes to sleep early. I have just one or two meals with him in a week. He takes lunch in office and dinner with his friends or relatives. I’ve stopped waiting for him at dinner as I know now that he would come home and tell me that he had dinner with his friend and I should have not waited for so long.
