Picture Story 1: Flooding in Pakistan

  Pictures       Trackback
It is only the start of the monsoon season, but already Pakistan is experiencing some of the worst flooding it has seen in over 80 years. Entire villages have been washed away, an early estimate of over 1,600 deaths so far and over 2 million displaced or otherwise affected. Not only is the immediate water damage causing havoc, the floods have inundated crop-producing areas, dealing a crippling blow to the agricultural-based economy and threatening a food crisis. The Pakistani government now struggles to rescue and provide aid to millions – while still fighting with militant Islamist forces in many of the hardest-hit regions. With even more heavy rains predicted in the coming days, here are a handful of recent photographs of Pakistanis as they cope with this latest disaster.

OVERVIEW

More than 15 million people are affected by Pakistan’s worst flooding in 80 years, with at least 1,600 fatalities, according to estimates from the government of Pakistan. While the severity of their needs has not yet been fully assessed, the number is greater than those who were affected by the 2005 South Asia tsunami (5 million), the 2005 South Asia earthquake (3 million), or the 2010 Haiti earthquake (3 million). The estimate of 290,000 homes destroyed or seriously damaged is almost the same as those destroyed in Haiti. Below are organizations that are working on relief and recovery in the region.

By: Noushah Arshad

Rains bring back many memories with them. We recall the way we used to enjoy in our childhood and youth. Sometimes we remember certain places, events and people or miss them in rainy seasons. Some words or acts cling to our mind and become a vital part of our memories. All of us have some feelings or thoughts related to rains and cloudy weather. Some of us get ecxited and enjoy them to the fullest while others become sad, lost in old memories of someone they have missed on the path of life. Life is full of strange experiences; experiences of a lovely weather, a hardship, a relation and even lonliness.

By: Saima Azhar

Asalam-o-Alykum wr wbkt,

My dear and respected friends! I have a really humble request to you all today that please help our poor and needy flood victims in Pakistan. Kindly play your own role in it sincerely as our religion teaches us because its not the time now left to discuss our politicians more neither we can expect any further help from them. Media should also play important role in it to tell helpful aid strategies to people rather than inviting 2 political parties and to let them fight in front of world that who playing better role to show off their performance of so called is being good politicians. Its better we concentrate on some flood victims aid strategy which we have to follow very systematically and I am going to share it with you all today.
